THE ISLE OF SHEPPEY SINGERS

Founded 1961

We rehearse at Sheppey Little Theatre, Meyrick Road, Sheerness, Kent every Wednesday evening from 8pm to 10pm - except over the Christmas and New Year period.

Annual subscription is £100 - equivalent to £2 per week.

Our repertoire is light and varied, ranging from popular songs to songs from musicals and films.

We aim to stage a major show/concert once a year, which we put on at Sheppey Little Theatre. This usually takes place in May. We also put on concerts at various other venues throughout the year, and we also sing at functions such as weddings.

We are always looking to welcome new members who want to sing in harmony. [Our repertoire is mostly in 3 and 4 part harmony - Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass]

If you are interested in joining you are welcome to come along and rehearse with us for 3 or 4 weeks, after which there is a short, friendly audition with a song of your own choice.

BRIEF HISTORY

Mr. Len Pankhurst formed the choir in 1961. Meetings were held, every Wednesday, in what was the Central Hotel, Banks Terrace - [near The Queen's pub in Sheerness High Street] - with Mrs. Evie Young as the pianist.

The first public performance took place approximately 1 year later.

After Mr. Len Pankhurst left, Mr. Peter Lifford took over as conductor until work took him away from the Island. His place was taken by Mr. Ian Walton until our present Musical Director, Mr. Les Haddock, took over.

On 24th November 1970 we were the first choir to perform at the newly opened Sheppey Comprehensive School [now known as the Oasis East Site]. The show, entitled "Songs from the Shows", also featured pianists Evie Young and Winifred Taylor playing the opening movement of Grieg's Piano Concerto.

The choir staged another show at the school in 1972, entitled "Sing through the Seasons". This time it was a variety show with costumes and set pieces.

We have continued to put on a wide variety of shows and themed concerts for over 50 years. Here is just a selection:-

"England's Evergreens" 1983 at Sheppey Little Theatre

"Lucky in Love" Written for the group by Mike Finden and George Byfleet

First staged at Sheppey Little Theatre in 1986, and put on again, at the theatre, in collaboration with The Shurland Entertainers in 1996

"The Gypsy Princess" At Sheppey Little Theatre 1988

"The Merry Widow" [1993 at Sheppey College]

"Celebration of Peace" 1995 at Sheppey Little Theatre

"Call Me Madam" [2003]At Sheppey Little Theatre

"Life is a Song and Dance" 2010 [rehearsal]

"50 years of Song"2011

This was our Golden Anniversary show, and we included all our favourite songs from 5 decades of shows, including many from the various musicals we had staged. Most of the latter were sung by the people who had taken the roles in the musicals concerned.[Unfortunately, in recent years, we have had to abandon fully-staged musicals due, primarily, to the lack of men!]

"Rhythm and Romance" 2012

"Musical Magic" 2013
